Best Damn Web Hosts - Keyword SEO - Part 1
While internet marketing has grown extensively and you can get traffic and exposure simply by paying for it, search engine optimization is still a huge part of marketing. Wouldn’t you rather show up on the front page of Google for free and eventually stop paying for advertising. Building your website with SEO in mind can help you get to the top of the organic results.
Search engines are finicky creatures with many undisclosed factors that influence their decisions on what they show you first. While these search engine algorithms will probably never be revealed, there are some proven factors that will boost your chances of getting up top. Keyword focus is as old as the internet.
Keyword Use in Document Title
The document title is found in the HTML code of a web page; “<title>Your Page Title</title>” right after the opening <head> tag. Keyword use in the title of you web page is essential. While you don’t want to hammer your title full of keywords, you do want to get your “keyword phrase” in there. It’s reccomended that you keep the keyword density between 10% - 50% in your title.
For example: Let’s say that you’re selling shoes and the name of your company is “The Shoe Rack.” Also, let’s say that The Shoe Rack focuses on selling comfortable running shoes. A solid title would look something like this: <title>The Shoe Rack - Comfortable Running Shoes for Athletes </title>, this would put your keyword density around 37%.
Keywords Meta Tag
The keywords meta tag is found in the HTML code of a web page, usually following shortly after the title tags: <meta name=”keywords” content=”Your Key Words Here”/>. While there is debate about the best way to enter your keywords, the accepted standard seems to be: keyword 1, keyword 2, keyword 3, keyword 4, keyword 5, you get the idea. You don’t want to have a ton of keywords, the concensus is that a smaller number of focused keywords (or key phrases) is better than a large number of general keywords.
Keep in mind while picking your keywords, that it’s easier to get up top for specific key phrases than single keywords. For example, ranking well for the keyword “shoes” is going to be much harder than for “Comfortable Running Shoes.” You’ll want to string 2 or 3 words together to make a key phrase.
Part 2 coming shortly.
