Keyword Use Part 3 — Domain Name & Page URLs

by A22Burnett on Jul.25, 2009, under Best Web Hosts, Keywords, SEO, URLs, Web Design, domain name

The domain name is the main part of your web address (www.YourDomainName.com).  Using keywords in your domain name is often overlooked when web addresses are chosen.  If you have a branded company, that people are going to specifically search for, it’s not that big of a deal.  Example: Instead of searching for peanuts, I’m probably just going to search for Planters.  Now if you’re not some big name company, you’re going to want to get those keywords into your domain name.  Idealy you want your domain name to match your targeted keyword phrase.  Example: If I’m selling funny clown shoes, I want the domain name www.funnyclownshoes.com.  The majority of search engines show the domain name, that matches the phrase searched, on the first page….. if not the first result.  Go try it for yourself.  Having your domain name match your targeted keyword phrase will give you a step up on your competitors.

Now, the page url is the part of your web address that follow the domain name.  Search engines give extra relevance to keywords within the page URL. There is some debate about how to separate the keywords: slashes, dashes or underscored, but the concensus seems to be, the less separaters the better.  So if one of your categories of funny clown shoes is polka dotted, you would want one something similar to the following url for that web page: www.funnyclowshoes.com/polka-dotted.html

Remember to use your targeted keywords in your domain name and page urls for extra weight in the search engines.

Keyword Use Part 2 — Body Text

by A22Burnett on Jul.20, 2009, under Best Web Hosts, Keywords, SEO, Web Design

Best Damn Web Hosts - Keyword SEO - Part 2

While the face of SEO is constantly changing, getting your basics right is still a necessary part of web design.  Keyword use in body text still carries weight within search engine algorithms. The body text is the text on your site that viewers see when they visit your site, the words that they’re actually reading.  This text doesn’t include any real HTML and the more visible text on you page, the more there is for search engines to index.

Using your keywords, or key phrases, in your body text is an essential part of SEO.  Now you don’t want to over do it, but you do want to work them into the regular flow of your page.  Don’t add them in to the point that your page becomes polluted with your keywords or phrases.  In general you want to keep your keyword density around 3% of your total words.  Most top sites are between 1% and 5% with majority being around 3%.  So if you page is 500 words long, you should have integrated your key phrase around 15 times.  This includes headings, titles and and all other words on the page, even text links.

There are numerous keyword density checking tools on the web, we will be adding a “SEO Tools” section to our website in the next couple of days.  Keep an eye out for that section because we have lots of useful tools on file.

Keyword Use Part 1 — Title & Keyword Meta Tag

by A22Burnett on Jul.17, 2009, under Best Web Hosts, Keywords, Meta Tags, SEO, Web Design

Best Damn Web Hosts - Keyword SEO -  Part 1

While internet marketing has grown extensively and you can get traffic and exposure simply by paying for it, search engine optimization is still a huge part of marketing. Wouldn’t you rather show up on the front page of Google for free and eventually stop paying for advertising. Building your website with SEO in mind can help you get to the top of the organic results.

Search engines are finicky creatures with many undisclosed factors that influence their decisions on what they show you first. While these search engine algorithms will probably never be revealed, there are some proven factors that will boost your chances of getting up top. Keyword focus is as old as the internet.

Keyword Use in Document Title

The document title is found in the HTML code of a web page; “<title>Your Page Title</title>”    right after the opening <head> tag. Keyword use in the title of you web page is essential. While you don’t want to hammer your title full of keywords, you do want to get your “keyword phrase” in there. It’s reccomended that you keep the keyword density between 10% - 50% in your title.

For example: Let’s say that you’re selling shoes and the name of your company is “The Shoe Rack.” Also, let’s say that The Shoe Rack focuses on selling comfortable running shoes. A solid title would look something like this: <title>The Shoe Rack - Comfortable Running Shoes for Athletes </title>, this would put your keyword density around 37%.

Keywords Meta Tag

The keywords meta tag is found in the HTML code of a web page, usually following shortly after the title tags: <meta name=”keywords” content=”Your Key Words Here”/>. While there is debate about the best way to enter your keywords, the accepted standard seems to be: keyword 1, keyword 2, keyword 3, keyword 4, keyword 5, you get the idea. You don’t want to have a ton of keywords, the concensus is that a smaller number of focused keywords (or key phrases) is better than a large number of general keywords.

Keep in mind while picking your keywords, that it’s easier to get up top for specific key phrases than single keywords. For example, ranking well for the keyword “shoes” is going to be much harder than for “Comfortable Running Shoes.” You’ll want to string 2 or 3 words together to make a key phrase.
